ANTI-BNP campaign Bushbury North & Oxley wards completed with 5,500 homes and a number of factories leafleted.

Quote from this month’s Searchlight magazine: “The union sisters took charge in Wolverhampton outnumbering the brothers by 2:1  In anticipation of possible by-elections, we leafleted the wards of two senior Wolverhampton Conservative councillors, due to be tried by a Crown Court jury on a cocaine rap. These were areas where the fascists have stood before or had leafleted recently.  The Remembrance Day leaflets proved popular and we had to order more for local factories.”

Several of us also went over to Nuneaton to help in joint UAF/HNH leafleting for the 10 Dec by-election.  This is the seat Bnp are defending after their councillor gave up!

Save Our Public Services

UNISON/Carers’ Campaigns are currently running for Meals on Wheels, Ekta Centre, Day Centre therapeutic earnings, as well as Underhill House. The council’s hitherto sham consultation continues until end of this month.

2,500 signatures were collected in a morning in Bilston and 1,200 in Wednesfield against the 83% rise proposed for the elderly and vulnerable people’s meals.  Tories & Liberals threaten massive cuts so that this year's council tax doesn't have to go up by a tenner. More job cuts will be announced Jan 6th which will affect some of our delegates directly.

 WB&DTUC November 2009 Secretary’s Report

ANTI-BNP campaign Bushbury North ward.  As part of a national weekend of action, Searchlight supplied us with 5,000 free Remembrance Day leaflets.
9 women and 3 men [5 BME] from UNISON, UNITE, NUT & CWU posted leaflets to 3,500 homes so far, about 60% of the ward was covered on the first day and areas of Oxley were also done where the fascists had themselves leafleted a fortnight before. The rest will be done in a further session.
We helped at the Cannock Chase by-election last month– a hard-hitting leaflet against the Bnp’s fascist candidate meant they came nowhere.
Protest against EDL 10am Market Sq, Nottingham organised by Notts TUC Sat. 5th December

Save Our Public Services -Tories & Liberals threaten massive cuts so that this year's council tax doesn't have to go up by a tenner.
Tories & Liberals voted to close Underhill Older People’s homes despite the offer of free cash from an appalled benefactor to keep it open.
Protests against council cuts continue.

 WB&DTUC September 2009 Secretary’s Report

We had anti-fascist campaign articles printed in UNISON & POA newsletters.

Delegates took the banner to demonstrate at Codnor, against the Bnp’s summer camp.  Turnout was much bigger than the numbers of fascists in the festival, and bigger than last year.  We were a lot happier with the organisation

Carphone Warehouse – after the successful demo which we took part in Wednesbury, Kulvinder Plaha (who spoke at our trades council) had the charges dropped and is back to work. Another steward’s ET is still to be heard.

ANTI-BNP campaign Bilston East ward.  As part of a national weekend of action, Searchlight supplied us with 4,500 free leaflets – we wrote the front-page, tailoring it to Bilston east ward where the Bnp have tried to call a public meeting there recently but pub refused, it also borders Princes End and there was NF activity there years ago – we’d not leafleted there before.  It went well, despite a lower turnout of leafleters than for the euro-elections and we did the whole ward in a few days.
Cannock Chase by-election this month features a very unsavoury fascist standing for the Bnp so we have offered help 07932 797139 for details

Agenda item 5) Resolution (subject to ratification) from UNISON General:
“That the West Midlands County Association of Trades Union Councils be dissolved; since it represents a layer of bureaucracy which hampers the ability for its constituent trades union councils to participate in the national conference.  We resolve to share information on activity and campaigns and participate in regional meetings of trade union councils to be called as necessary to assist united campaigning.”

WB&DTUC JUNE 2009 Secretary’s Report

ANTI-BNP campaign - we were successful again this time, in election campaigns, that’s 13-0 to us in Wolverhampton. We cannot rest on our laurels though as can be seen from the outcomes in the North West & Yorks/Humber. Pay and allowances will mean even more than we initially thought maybe £800,000 per year plus another £1million per year if they join with other European fascists in a grouping.

See enclosed report  - WHAT NEXT? Discussion at meeting

Aida Quilque leader of 'la minga' a popular movement in Colombia consisting of indigenous workers, peasants and trade unions, whose husband, also a prominent activist was murdered by security forces last year.  Aida, accompanied by her 12 year old daughter, who last month herself survived a murder attempt, were due to speak in the west Midlands next month but the tour has been cancelled as arrest warrants have been served on her and other leaders of the indigenous movement.

Rob Williams UNITE convenor of the Linamar car parts plant Swansea and vice chair of the National shop stewards network has won his campaign against his sacking by Linamar management Swansea

The news of Rob William’s unconditional reinstatement back in the Linamar car parts factory Swansea as convenor is a victory for all workers and militant trade unionism.

First of all it is down to the marvellous solidarity shown by his own workers (UNITE members) who refused, under tremendous intimidation, to accept that he was sacked.  They not only stood by Rob but were also prepared to take indefinite all out strike action to get his job back.  The big show of support at a mass rally of workers in Swansea in the week he was sacked demonstrated from the beginning that Rob was not alone and many other were prepared to come to this aid.  Unstinting support had come from UNITE and its general secretary Tony Woodley.

www.wolvestuc.org.uk is now 7 years old. We hit another record this week 1,200 different visitors in one day! We started with an average of 30 and now have 30,000 hits per day, 1.4million so far this year! Over 400 people have us in their ‘favourites’. We have appeared to have been hacked as I write today; hopefully we’ll be back up and fully functioning very soon.

Over 300 trade unionists, political activists, campaigners and people of Whitmore Reans celebrated the 1st May, Workers' Day in Wolverhampton for the 15th year. Searchlight, IWA, Women Against pit closures & Cuba Speakers, Jazz band, breakdancers and morris dancers, food, bouncy castle, face-painting and stalls. sponsored by FBU, UNISON, NUT and UNITE 0758.
Report on May 9th 2009 - Wolverhampton Hope Not Hate Day of Action -Thanks to all the 31 volunteers (13 women, 18 men) who helped distribute 9,500 Searchlight anti-fascist newspapers in a morning, urging people to vote AGAINST the fascist bnp on June 4th - the euro elections. 16 helped us for the first time. The Labour Party who turned out in force for the first time and provided a third of the volunteers. There were at least 10 UNISON, 7 WB&DTUC, 3 UNITE, 2 NUT, 2 GMB & UCU.  Significantly the majority of volunteers also attended the recent 1st May event; which had an anti-fascist theme and at which Matthew Collins spoke from Searchlight and called on support for our Day of Action. We provided a Caribbean lunch.
There are just 3 weeks left before the June 4th elections. The Euro election is proportional representation, with six west midlands seats being voted for together on June 4th. As little as 11% of the vote could win a West Midlands seat, funding £250,000 per year to the party. That is why it is so important that you use your vote in these elections and encourage others too. More people voting for other parties will lessen the chance of the BNP winning a seat in the 4th June European Parliamentary elections.
