Midlands Choose Youth rally in Wolverhampton had around 100 people attended.  Several union stalls; WB&DTUC & NUT ran a workshop on joining trade unions.

Almost 1,000 local people turned out for a We Are Walsall counter-protest against the EDL – a lively celebration of multicultural unity that overflowed into dancing in the empty streets of Walsall.

Separated by several steel barriers and well out of sight, a gang of 200 racists, who had come to Walsall from a far afield as Scotland, spent the day drinking in their designated pub and ended up fighting each other and throwing missiles at police - another nail in the EDL’s coffin.

Demo Against the Tories – TUC March for the Alternative, Birmingham attracted a broad range of unions and over 3,000 people.

A question from Michael Meacher MP to the Prime Minister simply and effectively setting out a class economic alternative to austerity:

“Given that the richest 1,000 persons in Britain made gains of £155 billion in the past three years of austerity, why will the Government not charge those gains at the capital gains tax rate, which would bring in about £40 billion? That would be enough, without any increase in public borrowing, to generate 1 million or more jobs. It would be far better to cut the deficit in that way—through growth, rather than through the Chancellor’s failed slump.”

The TUC is to organise a mass demonstration in London, under the banner of:

For a future that works

on Saturday 20th October 2012

A march through central London will culminate in a rally in Hyde Park.

Anti Academies Alliance – motion to affiliate – on agenda 21 June

We note the government’s Academies programme and the passing of the Education and Inspections Bill 2006 which makes provision for Trust schools.

We oppose the creation of Academies and Trust schools because:

They are not democratically accountable. The sponsor appoints the majority of governors and controls the school’s curriculum. Ownership of the schools buildings and grounds are transferred to the private sponsor. They break up the family of local schools.

They create more selection. Academies and Trust schools set their own admissions policy. As former Secretary of State for Education Estelle Morris put it, “Show me a school which has changed its admissions policy to attract more children from poor backgrounds with uncooperative parents.”

They reinforce competition based on school league tables. This will further divide schools into winners and losers, and add to the segregation of students on the basis of race and class.

Academies are outside the maintained sector of schools and so they are not bound by education law that protects the rights of students and parents.

Academies also set their own pay and conditions outside of national frameworks.

We resolve to affiliate to the Anti Academies Alliance at £40 per year

After a number of high profile crane collapses resulting in tragic deaths, the Construction Safety Campaign and others were instrumental in getting Health and Safety legislation established in 2010. These were the Tower Crane regulations and they act as an MOT for cranes and cost the industry £51,000 per year.

Now, two years later, Lofstedt and the Health and Safety Executive want to review the legislation and put it back out to consultation! He intimates that Crane Regulations are somehow not needed! The aim is to get rid of them.  www.hse.gov.uk/consult/live.htm before 4th July or see www.wolvestuc.org.uk

Progress on 1819 transported Wolverhampton Tinplate workers’ history

We were contacted by John Tully a Psychology Lecturer at Victoria University, Melbourne who saw the article on our website.  There has been a flurry of emails across the world and he has got a number of other people involved and keen to help including: Tasmanian State Secretary of the Amalgamated Manufacturing Workers' Union, a retired Supreme Court judge in Hobart, Prof from University of Tasmania History department, former Labor Tasmanian State Premier and the head of the Tasmanian archives and heritage dept.  They now have a list of all those transported in1819 and access to a database listing fuller details of transportees to find names of the Wolverhampton 5

They are keen to establish a permanent memorial in Tasmania. It is the 200th anniversary in 2019
