Why are we doing Heart Unions week?

HeartUnions week is all about building a stronger movement and an opportunity to celebrate the good work unions do in workplaces across the country. This year we're campaigning against scourge of Zero Hour Contracts and for a funded, above inflation pay rise for all public sector workers.

People all over Britain this week will be doing similar activities to help show that trade unions make a difference ...and it’s time to join one  www.tuc.org.uk/join-union

Why join a union?

Unions help workers get together, stop people being treated unfairly and get a better deal from their employers.  They’re the voice of Britain at work. Almost six million people are members of a union – from nurses to checkout assistants to lorry drivers to airline pilots.

They are for you when times are tough, even providing free legal advice if you need it. and every year they help more than 200,000 people get the training and learning opportunities they need to move on in their career. They are for you when times are tough, even providing free legal advice if you need it. and every year they help more than 200,000 people get the training and learning opportunities they need to move on in their career.

Rob NHS porter learns as he represents NHS workers: “Since I took that decision to become a rep, I haven’t looked back. I’ve done courses with UNISON and the TUC, getting computer skills and completing a diploma in employment law.

It's always good to join a union that's already active where you work - ask your colleagues, or look for information on a union noticeboard or on staff web pages.  Some jobs have unions that look after them specifically. Other jobs don’t – but they are looked after just as well by general unions, who have specialist sections.

Liam, shop floor worker has had support from his union rep since he was 18 said: “Harj, a rep in my store, came to the meetings with me and gave me loads of advice which helped put me at ease.“There’s strength in numbers. So why not see if your friends and colleagues at work want to join a union too, and all do it together.

Every job should be a great job   https://www.tuc.org.uk/campaigns/every-job-should-be-great-job
The Great Jobs Agenda is a charter for everyone to see whether you're in a great job, that unions can use to negotiate with employers to improve things, employers can use to check how they're doing, and we all can use to campaign for government action.

The objectives

We want workers to know when their job is a great job or a rubbish job, we want employers to sign up to make all their jobs great jobs, and we want MPs and councillors to commit to making great jobs for all a possibility.

The Great Jobs Agenda says all workers must:

be paid fairly
work in a safe and healthy workplace
be treated decently
have regular hours
get a voice on what matters at work; and
get the chance to get on in life

UNISON, UNITE, UCU and GMB members joined Wolverhampton & Bilston TUC's campaigning; six came out in the snow in Wednesfield and seven in the rain in Bilston to hand out out Valentine flowers and spread the trade union message as part of a national campaigning week.
