The Making of the British South Asian Working Class

The talk delves into the stories of South Asian resistance in Britain, shining a light on an overlooked history of working class political organising. Trade union organisation, Indian Workers Association, communists, solidarity and anti-racist fightback.

Drawing on the themes of his forthcoming book, Come What May, We’re Here to Stay: A Story of South Asian Resistance, Taj explores how South Asian communities have fought against racial injustice and for better working conditions.

The Frow Memorial Lecture organised by the Working Class Movement Library https://wcml.org.uk/ to which we affiliate, is named after the library’s founders, Eddie and Ruth Frow, whose passion for activism and working-class history laid the foundation for the archive.

Taj Ali is a journalist and historian. His work has appeared in the Guardian, the Independent and the Huffington Post. He is the former editor of Tribune Magazine.
