All representatives can benefit from training. Industrial relations, employment law and health and safety regulations are constantly changing. We need to be up to date. So please consider signing up today for one of our courses. Talk to other reps; raise the issue of training at the next branch or committee meeting. Let’s make sure that our members are represented by the best informed, knowledgeable and skilled reps possible. If we can do anything to support your branch/committee’s training, organising and campaigning please get in touch. Also, if your employer is consulting your union regarding apprenticeships we have experience in working with local unionised companies to ensure fair and good quality training for young and adult apprentices.

After a nervous wait to see if our courses are funded for 2017/18, we are safe!!!
We had confirmation recently from the Skills Funding Agency that we will receive 50% funding for the TUC programme. After a very positive meeting with Shrewsbury Colleges’ senior management team, I can confirm that we are open for business. 50% funding is a cut on what we received last year so it’s important that we maintain viable classes. We cannot let the collective resource, capacity, knowledge and experience that is found in the college trade union studies disappear. Nothing can substitute for the classroom experience of representatives coming together and learning from each other, facilitated by a tutor. The message is ‘Use us or lose us’! Once we have gone there is no going back.

Thanks for your continued support, please do all that you can to send your representatives on our courses.

In solidarity Mike Edwards – Trade Union Studies

“Solihull, Derby and Stoke Trade Union Studies have closed due to the 24% cut in adult education funding leaving Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Nottingham in the Midlands region. We have agreed an increase in our budget at Shrewsbury to support the provision in Stoke.
All our courses are fully funded for the next 12 months and collectively we need to support the local programme or we will die.” Shrewsbury & North Staffordshire Trade Union Studies Unit at Shewsbury College

CERTIFICATE IN EMPLOYMENT LAW 10 Mondays

Employment law in the UK is changing. TUC Education has introduced a new Certificate course to enable union reps to prepare for these changes in the best way possible.
The new course is designed for union reps who have already completed the TUC Stage 1 Union Reps course or its union equivalent. It is a practical training course that approaches the law, including the 2013–14 changes, from a workplace perspective and its principal concern is how knowledge and confidence in using employment law can improve workplace bargaining. The course will develop your ability to use the law in representational, organising and collective bargaining situations.

Courses being run locally by the WEA finished. Mike Edwards of Shrewsbury TU Studies Centre, who spoke at our delegate meeting is attempting to re-establish a permanent TU studies centre in Wolverhampton/Black Country. Mike will be running TUC Shop Stewards and Health & Safety Reps courses here.
