After 34 days of strikes management agreed to new pay talks at ArcelorMittal (Wednesfield) and (15-12-23) voted to accept a new backdated two year pay deal.
Members of UNITE WM6150 at ArcelorMittal (Wolverhampton). Before the new deal, the 20 steelworkers earned an average of £11.24 per hour, with some receiving just the national minimum wage. ArcelorMittal Distribution Solutions latest financial returns show it had operating profits of £33.1 million.
Pay talks had been ongoing since March but collapsed. 34 days of strike action were then taken between September and December, before the previous “final” offer was increased.
A £3/hour increase was won on the basic rate, though some bonuses were also consolidated.
Many workers have over 30 years service and this is the first strike at the site. It is 95% union density on the shop floor and no members crossed the picket line.
The ArcelorMittal SSC UK Wolverhampton facility serves the automotive, construction and appliances markets. The site mainly produces blanks, slit coils, flat products blanks, strips, sheets, coils and long products, used by companies in the automotive and construction industry such as Whittan Industries, GTEC, JLR, Toyota, Swindon Pressings, Nissan, Stadco, Sertec, Keystone Lintels and Legrand Electric.
