HMRC is missing at least £40 billion in unpaid tax – the ‘tax gap’ – the difference between the amount of tax owed and what the government collects.
This tax gap increased in real terms from £36 billion in 2021-22. It’s also an under-estimate as it doesn’t include money that wealthy companies shift offshore.
£40 billion is enough to cover government spending on the police, or nearly half the money spent on schools.
Yet the Tories have continued to cut civil service workers’ jobs and and attack their unions.
Congratulations to Warinder Juss and Sureena Brackenridge on their election along with Pat McFadden, as Labour MPs for Wolverhampton. Lee Barron Midlands TUC secretary was also elected Labour MP in Corby.
