Workers’ Memorial stone

We have ordered a memorial stone which is due to be erected in front of the Workers Memorial Day Tree in time for unveiling 12-30pm on Tuesday 28th April 2026

It’ll be dedicated to the workers of Wolverhampton and Bilston, who have been killed, disabled, injured, or made unwell, by their work.

£2,350 of donations have already been received from UNITE WM/6150, UNISON City of Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton TUC as well as several personal donations.

We still have £1,080 left to fund raise for the new memorial stone and the costs charged by the council.

all donations large or small can be made to:
BACS:
Sort Code: 60-83-01
Account: 33 02 34 49
Name: TUC Wolverhampton Bilston & District
reference: WMDay Stone

Time takes its toll, and not just on people, but on the very memorials we create to honour them.

After more than three decades, Wolverhampton’s Workers’ Memorial Tree plaque had gotten hard to see and its mounting decayed. It was in danger of being forgotten.

Wolverhampton maybe renewing its memorial stone, but the best way to recognise the health that workers have had stolen by their work, is with real, meaningful action that protects the workers of today and of tomorrow, all over the world.

Remember the dead, fight for the living.

June 1992 planting of Wolverhampton’s workers’ memorial day tree, a silver birch. Left to right Kamaljit Rana Singh (WM Health and Safety Action Committee and Indian Workers’ Association), unknown, Alan Millington President Wolverhampton, Bilston and District Trades Union Council and John Bird, Member of European Parliament for Midlands(West) and former Wolverhampton Council leader.

This is the state of the current plaque, often hidden in undergrowth, which will be replaced by the stone.
