2007 council election campaign

Wolverhampton, Bilston & District Trades Union council has run campaigns against the fascists each time they’ve sarted standing a few years ago. We leaflet the wards to encourage voters to turn out and vote for any of the other parties. The policies that the BNP put forward are not compatable with a decent democratic society.

We are pursuing HOPE, NOT HATE in our campaign. The BNP is not a normal political party. It is a racist and fascist organisation that peddles fear, loathing and division. It preys on people`s insecurities, offering cheap solutions to complex questions. More importantly, it stands against basic British traditions of fairness, tolerance, democracy and equality.

Black Country halts BNP as anti fascist campaigning starts to turn the tide

Thanks to everyone who has played a part in the campaign to stop the BNP.
They won NO seats in the Black Country this year and were pushed back significantly in a number of key wards.

In Wolverhampton and Walsall the fascists have also suffered reverses. In their previously strongest ward in Walsall, Rushall-Shelfield, where UAF has focussed its work, they were pushed from second to third place. In Wolverhampton the Trades Union Council organised a major campaign. The BNP vote was cut significantly in Wednesfield North and their impact seriously dented in other wards where they were intervening for the first time.

In the seats in Sandwell which they contested in both 2006 and 2007 their vote fell from 9268 to 7780 (from 32.6% to 27.0%). Still very high but the rising trend has been stopped with the beginnings of a reverse. They still, however, came within 20 votes of taking the third seat in Princes End in Tipton, so clearly there is no room for any complacency.

In Dudley, in the wards the BNP contested in both 2006 and 2007, their vote fell from 3946 to 3049 (from 26.9% to 20.9%). Malcolm Davis, the UKIP Councillor (originally elected as a Liberal Democrat) who led the viciously Islamophobic campaign against the building of the Mosque, failed to get re-elected, although he got a strong vote in St James Ward. The rise of UKIP, who contested every ward in Dudley, certainly cut into the BNP vote.

 

We can take heart from these results. The BNP`s momentum has been broken and it will damage the morale of their often fragile activist base. We still have a lot of work to do but clearly the BNP can be stopped.
